My Dearest Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This Sunday, millions will gather around their TVs for the Super Bowl, a game that crowns the best team after months of competition, training, and discipline. While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the excitement of sports, this weekend’s Gospel reading reminds us that in the spiritual life, victory is not won through competition or pride, but through humility before God.

In the Parable of the Publican and the Pharisee, two men come to the Temple to pray—one full of self-righteousness, the other full of repentance. The Pharisee boasts of his virtues, believing himself better than others, while the humble Publican simply bows his head and says, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” Christ tells us that it is the Publican who leaves justified, because he recognizes his need for God’s mercy.

This parable marks the beginning of our journey to Great Lent. It reminds us that fasting, prayer, and good works—while essential—mean nothing if they are done with pride. True preparation for Pascha begins in the heart, with humility and sincere repentance.

So, as we watch “the big game” game and admire the athletes who have trained so hard to win, let’s remember that our greatest victory is not a trophy or title, but drawing closer to Christ. And that victory comes not through arrogance or comparison, but through humility, repentance, and reliance on His grace.

Great Lent is coming—now is the time to prepare our hearts. See you in church as we begin this sacred journey together!

In Christ's love,
